Depends on what kind of crowd you want... or where you want to go. I'm not an expert on the sound stuff... but here is a list of a few places I've been:

    Dimples in Burbank
For truly a truly cheesy experience try this place. But if you really want to sing, I'd avoid Dimples on the weekend. Long rotations and they stop to sing Happy Birthday for each person there for a BD party.

    Sardo's in Burbank
Pretty cool and laid back. Not what I was expecting, but turned out to be fun. They have a good selection and they don't try and talk between songs. Plus their songbook is on their website. My friend and I went on a Saturday night at about 9:00 and there were only about 20 people in the whole bar. By 12 it was packed. Even saw a semi-famous actor singing that night. FYI... They have a $10 minimum for food or drinks per person. That might just be on weekends, though.

The Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, CA
So its kinda like a locals hang-out... But they do Karaoke in two different locations of the hotel depending on the night. The Brass Elephant is their bar and the stage is a bit more "intimate" while the Mayan Room is a larger room and draws a larger crowd. They are in the bar a few nights during the week (not sure which ones) and on Sunday night, but they do Karaoke every Friday and Saturday in the Mayan Room. aztechotel.com/schedule.html

Acapulco Mexican Restaurant in Monrovia, CA
If you really want to sing and don't care about a crowd. This is a great place. Been there on Saturdays after about 10 and was able to sing about 5 songs. Not much of a crowd, but you will get some hardcore singers who bring their own stuff, too. A good place to practice or try something new.

Plus, there's a new place in Pasadena I want to try out. I guess it just opened. They do Karaoke on Wednesday from 7:30 til Midnight. Bragging about their "Las Vegas stage and lighting".

Not sure if any of this is helpful...

Thanks so much for the info. definately helpful! I know what you mean about Sardo's, not what i expected, seemed better than Brass Monkey. Haven't tried Dimples, sounds like it not what i am looking for. Tryin to find a place where they respect the singer in ways of sound equipment, stage, lighting etc....

      Thanks so much

hey - ive been singing for about 10 years and have never seen a place that REALLY 'respects' the singers - they are there to pay rent by selling drinks - and the laraoke stage is kinda an afterthought - theyre not gonna have lights - or a person paid to run them - yknow? The biggest stage ive seen for karaoke is at teh Queen Mary in the San Fernando valley - a stage built for actual shows they have there alla time. They are known for their shows of female-impersanators - and so they put on a show on a big stage.

If youre tryna live out yer fantasy of a wild crowd response and lights, respect, etc., I'd say keep it on the back burner, keep singing, and yu will get plenty of appreciative people, and some who arent there to listen, even when yu gave your best performance. If you keep it, maybe a karaoke place will give yu a night of your own, and you can charge admission - but like I said - they have to pay rent - so they need to know that yu are an attraction - so they wont really care hopw good yu are - they simply need to fill the place, sell drinks, pay rent. So the more yu sing, the more people know yu, and the more followers yu can gain. Yu may even have your own website and make your own cds - this will prob help keep tabs on your audience, and maybe someday, someone may offer yu a contract - to sing at their place, record something, etc.... who knows...

New to this tribe, but not to karaoke. I have been doing Karaoke long before it was fashionable, and will always love it. Because of that, I have a club-level Professional Video Karaoke system and a plethora of discs, all catalogued and in binders.
I used to host rather large, though semi-public karaoke events at my shop in San Pedro. I am in the Valley now and have a large home where we do Karaoke quite often. We even have a small stage set-up near the pool out back, with a little lighting system. Like I said, Karaoke is pretty special to my household.
I'd be willing to open my home to karaoke enthusiasts on whatever regular basis considered, since it is what I love anyway. Age wont be a factor, and so long as no one minds really exotis pets, a pool, and excellent munchables, I am game.

How about it? Anyone want to toss out a few dates here and let's get the party started? We also do Star wars Gaming here, so we are quite the social establishment~
I also rent my system out if anyone needs it.
